DOUG STOEHR: If you’ve been hurt in an auto accident, I always ask, “Do you have limited tort or full tort?”
NAT SMITH: If you choose limited tort coverage, you get the benefit of a slight decrease in your premiums. But the detriment that comes with that is much more drastic than the premium savings.
The cost of selecting a limited tort coverage is that you are unable to make a claim successfully for pain and suffering unless your injury is serious in nature.
DOUG STOEHR: In Pennsylvania, the state minimum of insurance is only $15,000. Frequently, when someone is hurt, the value of their claim easily exceeds the $15,000. We strongly advise our clients to purchase underinsured motorist coverage.
NAT SMITH: If the negligent party does not have coverage to compensate a client for their injuries, then we will turn to our client’s insurance carrier. We’ll analyze our client’s insurance coverage right from the start of the case to determine what coverages might be applicable to their claim.
There are such coverages as uninsured motorist coverage if there is no insurance on the part of the defendant.
DOUG STOEHR: So you need to understand your insurance coverages you have or that you think you have. And often, you can even stack your coverages because you might have multiple vehicles on your policy or within your household. So this is where it gets a little complex and you need our services to help you sort this out.
