Truck Drivers Guilty of Distracted Driving

When you see tractor-trailers moving along our country's highways, you expect their drivers to be safe, alert, and vigilant. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.  A local New York City news source posted an article a few years ago about the increased occurrence of truck drivers who text and drive.  According to the news report, through local ABC news station 13WHAM,  "A hidden camera investigation has uncovered a dangerous trend on highways. WABC-TV in New York City set up camera on several of highly travel roadways, catching truckers texting and talking on their phones and one driver even talking on two cell phones at once. The New York State Department of Transportation said nearly 16,000 truckers were ticketed for distracted driving in 2013, but only four of them were suspended and taken out of service." 4 out of 16,000 drivers who were caught texting while driving seems like a tiny percentage!

If you are involved in a car accident, most states, including Pennsylvania, have at least one section on the incident report dedicated to distracted driving violations.  Fines and charges may increase if you are cited with one of these violations.  Distracted driving is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents on the highway.  If you have been injured as the result of a distracted driver, it might be time to consult an attorney.  Attorney Doug Stoehr is a personal injury lawyer serving western and central Pennsylvania.  Please call his firm at 814-946-4100 for more information.

Two Tractor-Trailers Collide, Cause Accident on I-80

A few weeks ago, I-80 East was closed for part of a day due to two tractor-trailer trucks causing a large accident.  While on the highway, one truck hit the back of another truck, which resulted in an accident and stopped traffic for many hours.  According to accident reports, at least one person is dead as a result. Unfortunately, these types of truck accidents are not uncommon on PA highways, especially highways that tend to be congested with many large tractor-trailers.

Commercial truck drivers are a significant cause of motor vehicle accidents . Often, these commercial drivers are fatigued and are driving above the mandated allotment of hours. Additionally, many of them are driving large vehicles that are not up to federal and state safety standards. As a result, passengers and other vehicles often bear the brunt of their illegal activity and are often seriously injured or die from a resulting collision. If you have been injured or a loved one has died as a result of a commercial vehicle accident, please contact our law office for a consultation at no cost to you at the Law Offices of Attorney Doug Stoehr at 814-946-4100.

Tractor-Trailers Can Cause Big Problems on Highways

Recently, a terrible accident occurred on I-81 in Pennsylvania that involved a motorcycle driver and a tractor-trailer.  The motorcycle driver crashed when a blanket got stuck into his back wheel, then was hit when multiple tractor-trailers consequently ran over him. The driver was thrown from his cycle, where he was hit by the large oncoming trucks.  According to reports, none of the tractor-trailers drivers stopped to help or investigate the accident. State police are still looking for the drivers.

Tour bus and commercial truck drivers are a significant cause of motor vehicle accidents onAmerica's roads and highways. Often, these commercial drivers are fatigued and are driving above the mandated allotment of hours. Additionally, many of them are driving large vehicles that are not up to federal and state safety standards. As a result, other vehicles and motorcycle riders often bear the brunt of their illegal activity and are often seriously injured or die from a collision with the tour bus or commercial truck. If you have been injured or a loved one has died as a result of a commercial vehicle accident, please contact our law office for a consultation at no cost to you at the Law Offices of Attorney Doug Stoehr at 814-946-4100.

Throwback Thursday: Editorial on Distracted Driving

Please enjoy our Throwback Thursday post a day late this weekend! Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Pennsylvania has had a driving and texting ban that has been in effect since 2011.  However, many drivers continue to text on the road, as well as engage in other forms of distracted driving.  What have Pennsylvania and other states done to address this issue?  Some of the things that police have done include sitting in unmarked SUVs and riding city buses to be able to look down on drivers.  You might want to read this editorial, written in Lancaster Online, to find out more.

Distracted driving is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents on the highway.  If you have been injured as the result of a distracted driver, it might be time to consult an attorney.  Tractor-trailer drivers are also cited with distracted driving, and can leave devastation in their wake after a highway accident.  Attorney Doug Stoehr is a personal injury lawyer serving western and central Pennsylvania.  Please visit his website athttp://www.stoehrlaw.com for more information.

Throwback Thursday: Large Award For Family of Accident Victim

On this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, let's take a look at a large settlement that was awarded to a family of a tractor-trailer accident victim.  Our firm takes many cases similar to this one, so this information is valuable when pursuing your legal claim!

Many people who have traveled on Pennsylvania's state highways, especially on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, have most likely noticed the large amount of tractor-trailers.  Although many of these drivers are conscientious and considerate, many others are aggressive, speed, and frequently switch lanes without signaling.  As a result, Pennsylvania has a high number of tractor-trailer accidents, which can lead to serious accidents and fatalities for neighboring cars and trucks.

One such case of a Pennsylvania tractor-trailer accident has been recently publicized in the local media.  In this particular case, a tractor-trailer driver in Lebanon County, PA failed to signal before pulling back out onto the highway at under 20 miles per hour, causing a neighboring car to crash into the truck.  The crash claimed the life of the car's driver, who was a father of four.  His widow sued the trailer driver and his employer for a variety of charges, including wrongful death, negligence, and punitive damages.  The judge ruled in favor of the victim's family, awarding over 2 million dollars in damages.

If you or a loved one has been in an accident due to the fault of a tractor-trailer, it might be time to consult with an attorney.  Attorney Doug Stoehr represents clients in Blair and the surrounding counties in central and western Pennsylvania.  For more information on his law firm, please visit his website at http://www.stoehrlaw.com or call his office at 814-946-4100.

Throwback Thursday: Editorial on Enforcing PA's Distracted Driving Laws

Once in a while, we like to post a good editorial piece to show what Pennsylvanians are thinking about certain laws, procedures, and protocols set forth from the state and national government.  In this particular Throwback Thursday post, we'll be taking a look at an editorial addressing distracted driving laws in PA and if they are actually enforceable offenses as they stand currently.  Our original blog post, originally written in May of 2014, can be found below!

Strange But True: Bus Driver Causes Accident By Eating Burrito While Driving!

The term "distracted driving" normally makes you think of texting or talking on your phone while driving.  Maybe you also think about talking to others in your car, or maybe tending to children in the backseat. However, would you ever think about a driver eating a burrito as a cause for distracted driving?
This was the case for one bus driver in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Last summer, the driver was in charge of a bus and was driving it down a major road while eating a burrito with two hands.  He lost control of the vehicle and hit a line of stopped cars. Several drivers in other cars were injured as a result, and have filed personal injury lawsuits against the negligent driver. The driver's reckless behavior was also seen on camera footage shot from the camera located inside the city bus he was driving. It seems that a wide variety of activities can be construed as "distracted driving", and for very good reason!
For your information, if you are involved in a car accident, Pennsylvania has at least one section on the incident report to address to distracted driving violations. Fines and charges may increase if you are cited with one of these violations. In addition to fines and charges for distracted driving, you also are putting yourself and others in serious danger. Think twice before texting, chatting, and eating while you drive!

Are You STILL Participating in Distracted Driving? This Post May Change Your Mind

If you're still driving while using your phone, you may want to think again!  Pennsylvania law enforcement are noticing a significant increase in car accidents caused by incidences of distracted driving, such as texting and driving.  Policemen are aware of this trend and are on the lookout to catch people who are driving unsafely.  One such law enforcement officer that was interviewed in Erie, PA states that distracted driving is especially dangerous because it takes away from three separate aspects of driving--visual control, manual control, and mental focus.  To add to the problem, PA law states that you can dial a phone number and use it for voice communication while driving in our state, which is really unsafe as well! Nationally, over 1.6 million accidents were caused by distracted driving last year.  That number is simply outrageous and should not be a danger for traveling Americans on the road!

Additionally, did you know this fact? If you are involved in a car accident, Pennsylvania has at least one section on the incident report to address to distracted driving violations. Fines and charges may increase if you are cited with one of these violations. In addition to fines and charges for distracted driving, you also are putting yourself and others in serious danger.

Motorcycle Accident In Pittsburgh Sends Two To Hospital

Recently, two people were transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital as a result of a motorcycle/car collision.  The impact was so significant that the motorcycle was found 30 feet from the original site of the accident.  Both the motorcycle driver and the motorcycle passenger were taken to a UMPC hospital to treat their leg injuries.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery!
Unfortunately, not only do cars frequently hit motorcycles, but tour bus and commercial truck drivers are a significant cause of accidents as well, especially on our state's highways.
In addition, wearing a helmet is a common safety procedure that this law office feels should be followed at all times to protect yourself, whether you are on a bicycle or a motorcycle. However, we recognize that, at this time, mandatory helmet laws for those over 21 are not yet in effect in all areas of the country. We also strongly feel that motorcyclists, cars, and bicyclists should share the road in a responsible and respectful manner. If you are a motorcyclist who has been wrongfully injured in a motor vehicle accident and may suffer from a spinal cord, brain, or other serious injury, please contact our law office at 814-946-4100 for a consultation at no cost to you.

Hazardous Waste in I-70 Truck Accident

A tractor-trailer accident in Donegal Township recently highlighted just how dangerous highway traveling can be.  According to the WTAE article, a large tractor-trailer was carrying hazardous cargo when it crashed and rolled down a hill after its driver lost control.  The crash, which occurred on Interstate 70, backed up traffic to a standstill near the West Virginia/Pennsylvania border for over an hour.  The accident overall caused hours of delays for I-70 drivers.  An eyewitness present at the scene reported to the news source that the driver was traveling in the lefthand lane when they suddenly made a turn into the right lane.  The turn resulted in a loss of control, in which the truck subsequently hit the guardrail, eliminating almost 40 sections of the rail, and went over a nearby embankment.  The driver was flown to nearby UMPC Presbyterian Hospital.  A hazmat team and cleaning crew arrived at the scene soon after the accident occurred.
Tractor-trailers can be very dangerous on the Pennsylvania state highways and roads.  Often, these drivers are moving at dangerous speeds and may also be tired and not pay attention to the road.  If you or a loved one has been injured in a tractor-trailer accident, it may be time to consult with an attorney.  Attorney Doug Stoehr is a personal injury lawyer serving western and central Pennsylvania.  For more information on his firm, please call his office at 814-946-4100.
