It’s back to school season in PA. Are you aware of the statewide rules and regulations regarding bus safety? According to PennDOT, here are some important rules and regulations you need to know this school year:
- Drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out
- When rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, drivers in the opposite lane don’t have to stop.
- Obviously, make sure all children have left the bus and are out of the dangerous roadway before proceeding, even if the bus is no longer flashing its red lights.
If you don’t follow the PA school bus rules, you may be subject to fines of $250, points on your record, and/or drivers license suspension. Use common sense, have patience with young children, and be kind during these time at the beginning and end of the school days.
Additionally, if your children were hit by a driver when exiting or entering the bus, you may wish to consult an attorney about your legal options. A bus accident, no matter the situation, is traumatizing to the child and their family. At our Altoona, PA law office, we are prepared to consult with you on your potential legal claim involving bus accidents. For more information, give us a call at 814-515-9074.
