Christmas Fire Safety

In continuing our trend of examining holiday safety measures, this day's post focuses on holiday safety surrounding household fire risks.  Unfortunately, those beautiful Christmas trees and candles do pose a significant safety risk to homes during the holiday season.  According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA):

  • Fire departments around the country respond to roughly 170 Christmas tree related fires per year.  These fires result in an average of four deaths and over $10M in property damage per year.
  • Statistically speaking, Christmas tree related home fires result in a much higher percentage of deaths per fire as opposed to other types of home fires.
  • About half of these fires result after an issue with electricity and/or lighting around the tree. Often, these fires also involve heat sources being too close to the tree.
  • Roughly 40% of these fires occurred in the main living space of the home.
