In continuing our trend of examining holiday safety measures, this day's post focuses on holiday safety surrounding household fire risks. Unfortunately, those beautiful Christmas trees and candles do pose a significant safety risk to homes during the holiday season. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA):
- Fire departments around the country respond to roughly 170 Christmas tree related fires per year. These fires result in an average of four deaths and over $10M in property damage per year.
- Statistically speaking, Christmas tree related home fires result in a much higher percentage of deaths per fire as opposed to other types of home fires.
- About half of these fires result after an issue with electricity and/or lighting around the tree. Often, these fires also involve heat sources being too close to the tree.
- Roughly 40% of these fires occurred in the main living space of the home.
