Tips For A Safe Holiday

The holiday season is a fun and enjoyable time, but it also comes with its own hazards and safety risks.  However, there are ways to avoid and/or reduce your risk in your own home and when you’re out visiting others during the holiday.  Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Make sure your carbon monoxide detector is up to date.  Many families use heating methods in the winter that increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.
  • Don’t let your car warm up inside of your closed garage. This is a great way to increase your risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, too.
  • Do a car safety check, including fluid levels, tire pressure, and car seat installation before you hit the road.  Also make sure your roadside emergency kit is full of all of the supplies you may need if you get into a roadside accident.
  • Make sure you’re not bringing hazards into your homes or the homes of other people.  For example, some common holiday plants like poinsettias and mistletoe are very poisonous to household pets and small children.

As always, when you’re hosting holiday gatherings, you must keep premises liability in mind.   When you host a gathering, you are responsible for what your guests ingest at your party as well as the safety conditions within your home.  Safety includes keeping your exterior areas clean of snow and ice, keeping your interior walkways clear, and making sure your household pets will not cause a risk to others.  Also, if your guests drink too much alcohol and drive home, you could potentially be held liable, too. Be smart when both hosting and attending a party.
