Motorcycle Accident Statistics

In an effort to raise motorcycle safety awareness, we are highlighting some common themes that tend to occur when a motorcycle accident occurs, as well as some safety statistics.   It is so important to respectfully share the road with other vehicle and motorcycle drivers in an effort to prevent accidents on the road.  Motorcyclists and bicyclists may be particularly vulnerable to injury due to to their exposure to the outside elements when they're riding.  According to an article cited at the bottom of this post, here are some interesting facts relating to motorcycle accidents:

  • Some physicians note that motorcyclists may be especially prone to head injuries when they're involved in an accident. These injuries may be especially difficult to treat and recover from.
  • Wearing a helmet may reduce fatalities from motorcycle accidents by almost 40%, and reduce the risk of brain injury by about 2/3.
  • For every mile traveled on a motorcycle, nationwide traffic statistics report that the number of fatalities is over 25x the number for car drivers
  • Typically, the most motorcycle accidents occur in the summer, especially during the month of July.

In an effort to avoid serious injuries, motorcyclists need to their part, too.  Motorcyclists and ATV riders should be especially careful to wear proper protective gear to avoid head injuries as a result of a traumatic brain injury.  Vehicle drivers also need to be aware of motorcyclists on the road and be kind, careful, and alert drivers.

Wearing a helmet is a common safety procedure that this law office feels should be followed at all times to protect yourself, whether you are on a bicycle or a motorcycle. Although not all drivers are required to wear helmets in Pennsylvania, we feel that it's still the safe and responsible thing to do.  We also strongly feel that motorcyclists, cars, and bicyclists should share the road in a responsible and respectful manner. If you are a motorcyclist who has been wrongfully injured in a motor vehicle accident and may suffer from a spinal cord, brain, or other serious injury, please contact our law office at 814-946-4100 for a consultation at no cost to you.
