Fourth of July Driving Safety Tips

Are you planning on driving somewhere to celebrate during our Fourth of July holiday?  It is important to be especially cautious during this holiday time period.  Others who are out celebrating may be be driving under the influence and/or making other similarly unsafe choices. In an effort to keep yourself safe on the road, here are some tips from a local news article out of New Bern, NC:

  • Make sure you’re scanning the road frequently to keep aware of your surroundings and possible issues, including looking past the cars in front of you.
  • When you’re passing another car, try and glance at the area by the front wheel of the car you’d like to pass. That way, it may be easier to tell if that car is about to leave their lane and you may avoid a collision.
  • Leave plenty of room between cars when traveling, especially on highways or on winding roads.
  • Of course, always use your car’s indicators, including turn signals, headlights, and horn (if needed).  Do not move lanes or exit without signaling your intent.
  • If you are uncertain of other driver’s intent or feel they may be driving under the influence, give them plenty of space on the road.

We cannot stress to you enough how important it is to remain safe and alert while driving, especially during periods of increased motor activity. Motor vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents, and pedestrian accidents can be easily prevented with a few simple, common-sense tips, such as not driving while fatigued or distracted, along with wearing your seatbelt. Attorney Douglas V. Stoehr works with clients who have been injured in motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle accidents.
