Be Pedestrian Aware!

Pedestrian safety is a serious issue, considering most of us are pedestrians at least a portion of each day.  However, the pedestrian injury and death rate remains unecessarily high.  Did you know that, on average, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in traffic accidents in 2017 (NHTSA.gov)?  It is every driver’s responsibility to make sure they’re being vigilant and looking out for pedestrians while they are operating their cars. Here are some ways to help protect pedestrians while you are out driving:
  • When entering a crosswalk, yield to pedestrians and leave a good amount of space between the crosswalk and your car. That way, other cars will know that people are crossing, too.
  • Don’t ever pass a car that is stopped in front of a crosswalk.
  • Pay extra attention in school zones, even if the flashing lights are not on during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times. Many children use the facilities before and after school, and may not pay attention to cars on the street.
  • Be careful and take your time when backing out of parking spaces, especially in parking lots.
It is your responsibility as a licensed driver in the state of Pennsylvania to not only drive your care with care and caution, but also be aware of other hazards on the road.  Drivers frequently share the road with bicyclists, motorcycle drivers, and pedestrians, especially in more residential areas. As such, it is your duty as a member of your community to drive your car safely, responsibly, and with regard for the well-being and safety of others.  This is especially true to remember in cases where you’ve been drinking! Call a designated driver and save the life of not only yourself, but other innocent bystanders.  Also play it safe and do not engage in distracted driving, such as talking on your cell phone or texting.
