Holiday Gatherings And Your Dog

Thanksgiving is nearly here and Christmas is coming right afterwards! However, this time of year may not be easy for your pets.  The holidays can be a stressful time for both dogs and their owners.  Anecdotally, reports of dog bites appear to increase during the holiday season and is often appears to be due, in part, to dogs being exposed to an increase in movement, activity, and exposure to unfamiliar people.  These unknown people and situations can be frightening to dogs, and may make them appear defensive and more prone to biting people. In order to keep both pets and owners safe this holiday season, our law firm has a few tips to offer:

  • Think about placing the dog apart from the crowds and noise of your home during gatherings.  Putting your dog in a quiet, familiar area may make them feel more comfortable. Some treats to occupy them and make them distracted are an added bonus!
  • Designate one familiar person to be in charge of checking in on the dog. That person can make sure they are safe and comfortable apart from the noise and bustle.
  • When visiting another person’s home, don’t allow your children to pet or hug unfamiliar dogs without the owner’s permission.
