ATV and snowmobile use in our state is common, especially in our central PA area. What you might not know is how much land the state of Pennsylvania has for recreational use. According to reports, snowmobile riders are able to access about 3,000 miles of trails. These trails can be found in 90% of state forest districts, as well as in many of our state parks. The state snowmobile season officially runs from December 15-April 1st. The state also provides condition updates via its snowmobile hotline, which is updated twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays). As many state snowmobile riders know, all all-terrain vehicle units have to be registered in the state of PA.
Although we may think more commonly about car and truck accidents, bus accidents are not uncommon, either. Recently, Greyhound was sued for injuries its passengers sustained while riding one of their buses from New York City to Cleveland. According to news reports, the bus crashed after the driver fell asleep at the wheel. One of the 43 passengers died and many sustained severe injuries. One passenger recently received a payment of $27M from the bus company due to the severity of his injuries, which included an amputation of one of his legs and over 30 surgeries related to other injuries.
Have you ever wondered how PA hospitals stack up in terms of areas like safety and standards of care? Well, you can check online at any time. A website called The Hospital Safety Grade scores hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from medical errors and avoidable injuries, accidents, and infections. You can access the website here: http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. Although many hospitals in our area appear to meet a good quality standard of care, it is not universal across all locations.
Are you sharing the road with bicyclists? Many people in our beautiful part of the state enjoy exercising outdoors on Pennsylvania's roads, trails, and towns. As motorists, you are expected and required to share the road with these individuals when you encounter them while out driving. However, motorists are not always respectful of bicyclists and often follow too closely behind them, don't give them enough lane space, and even sometimes try and run them off the road. Other common dangers that occur while out biking including poorly maintained roads and bike paths.
Car crashes and chronic pain sometimes go together more commonly than you might think. In some studies, car crash victims have an over 80% increased risk of chronic pain in the future. As a result, although some people may like to "tough it out" after their car crash and minimize any post-accident pain, it is not helpful and may lead to increased medical and emotional difficulties in the future.
