Child Sustains Significant Injury in Gym Class, Lawsuit Reviewed by PA Supreme Court

When your child faces an unforeseen injury, it can be a parent's worst nightmare.  Recently, a child suffered an injury while in gym class in a PA school.  According to reports, the 9-year-old student was running in gym class, could not stop, tripped, and fell into an unpadded concrete wall.  He hit the wall so hard that he lost consciousness.  He missed a great deal of school and began to develop memory problems and chronic headaches, even several years after the accident occurred.  The student's family sued the school for negligence by failure to properly pad the walls in the gym.  The PA Supreme Court reviewed the case recently and found that a school can be held liable for the injuries that the child sustained.

Young Child Injured at Nursery School

Injuries can happen anywhere. It's especially scary when it happens to someone you love, like your child.  Recently, a nursery school/daycare in the Philadelphia area was sued for an injury a child sustained while in their care during the day. According to news sources, a four-year-old minor was playing in a classroom when he fell when climbing on top of a play tunnel in the classroom.  When the child fell, he broke his arm and required surgery to repair it, including pins and wire supports for stability.  Per the lawsuit reports, the child continues to suffer lasting pain and has has required outside physical therapy.

Increased Accident Risk for Children During Summer Months

Accidents and injuries tend to increase during the summer, especially for children.  Do you know that many common injuries occur where you may least expect them?  According to one hospital's website, ER visits increase significantly during the summer.  Many of these injuries occur as a result of children getting into accidents, such as falling out of windows (whether they have screens or they don't).  Fire pits are also a common place for injuries, as are lawn mower accidents, swimming accidents, and pedestrian accidents.  The time around dusk can be particularly dangerous for children out playing, since it may be more difficult for others to see them walking, biking, and rollerskating on the streets.

Many Child Car Seats Are Incorrectly Installed

Although this may be an older article, it is incredibly worthwhile to read!  Several years ago, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on a safety initiative run by the state police to assess child safety seats. A voluntary inspection occurred at sites throughout the state for a two-week period.  Over 75% of the 319 seats checked were not installed correctly.  Of course, this is a huge cause for concern!  The state police listed the most common problems as a failure to position the seat in the right direction and not properly adjusting the safety harnesses or harnessing the seat in the right manner.  If you are concerned that your child's car seat is not installed correctly, you can call your local police department to see if they'd be able to do a safety check for you.
