$30 Million Settlement in Allegheny County!

Recently, an Allegheny County family was awarded $32 million dollars in a wrongful death lawsuit that killed their six-year-old son.  The suit was filed against a driver (and his employer) who hit a car that the boy was traveling in.  The car the child was in was pulled off to the side of the road due to car trouble, and was hit so hard that it went into the median of the road. The other passengers were injured as well.  The driver who hit their car was charged with homicide by vehicle, reckless endangerment, and speeding. He is also facing serious jail time.  The driver was on the job for a masonry company, and his employer was violating their own policy by letting the driver use a company vehicle with a prior history of DUI.  For more on the story, please read the original Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article here.

Thanksgiving Is Most Dangerous Day for PA Drivers

Prepare for the upcoming holiday travel! According to state statistics, the Thanksgiving holiday is one of the deadliest times of the year to be on the road.  Other holidays that top the list include July 4th (the all-time highest holiday for accidents across the nation) and Labor Day.  However, in Pennsylvania, Thanksgiving surpasses all other holidays in terms of the number of motor vehicle accidents.   According to an online news source, via the Pennsylvania Medical Society, "counting July 4 as well as the days just prior and afterwards, the Independence Day holiday was second in crashes (3,051 in 2010) and third in deaths (50). Labor Day and days surrounding the holiday was third in crashes (3,013) and second in deaths (51). The Thanksgiving holiday season topped both rankings for crashes (4,352) and deaths (55)."  Most of our state's accidents occur in the counties of Philadelphia, Allegheny, Lancaster, Bucks, and Westmoreland.

Motorcycle Accident In Pittsburgh Sends Two To Hospital

Recently, two people were transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital as a result of a motorcycle/car collision.  The impact was so significant that the motorcycle was found 30 feet from the original site of the accident.  Both the motorcycle driver and the motorcycle passenger were taken to a UMPC hospital to treat their leg injuries.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery!
Unfortunately, not only do cars frequently hit motorcycles, but tour bus and commercial truck drivers are a significant cause of accidents as well, especially on our state's highways. Often, these commercial drivers are fatigued and are driving above the mandated allotment of hours. Additionally, many of them are driving large vehicles that are not up to federal and state safety standards. As a result, other vehicles and motorcycle riders often bear the brunt of their illegal activity and are often seriously injured or die from a collision with the tour bus or commercial truck.
In addition, wearing a helmet is a common safety procedure that this law office feels should be followed at all times to protect yourself, whether you are on a bicycle or a motorcycle. However, we recognize that, at this time, mandatory helmet laws for those over 21 are not yet in effect in all areas of the country. We also strongly feel that motorcyclists, cars, and bicyclists should share the road in a responsible and respectful manner. If you are a motorcyclist who has been wrongfully injured in a motor vehicle accident and may suffer from a spinal cord, brain, or other serious injury, please contact our law office at 814-946-4100 for a consultation at no cost to you.
