Elder Physical Abuse

Pennsylvania Physical Elder Abuse Attorney

Elder abuse is a growing problem in America that is worsening as much of our population begins to retire. As a result of this wave of retirement, many aging citizens are being taken care of by others, whether in a hospital, nursing home, or home care setting. Many of these caregivers are responsible and caring workers, but some take advantage of their patients and abuse them in a variety of ways.

The National Center on Elder Abuse estimates that between 1 and 2 million people aged 65 and over are victims of elder abuse each year. Elder abuse takes shape in four main ways-physical, sexual, emotional/psychological, and financial.

Physical Abuse of the Elderly

Physical abuse of the elderly is one of the most common forms of abuse and is perhaps the easiest to spot. Common signs of physical elder abuse include, but are not limited to:

  • Inappropriate use of restraints that leave bruises, cuts, or cut off circulation
  • Unexplained bruises or cuts, especially around the neck or groin areas
  • Over/under medication for pain or other health conditions
  • Unusual bone fractures or head injuries

Additionally, a report of abuse from the elderly individual is also something that should be taken seriously. Another common sign of abuse is patient withdrawal from interactions with the caregiver, as well as looking uncomfortable when near the caregiver.
